Wind is the roof damage the Triangle sees most. Straight-line winds and microbursts lift and crease shingles, break the seal that holds them down, and tear sections off entirely, and most of it is invisible from the driveway. Summit & Oak documents wind damage the way an insurer needs to see it and restores the roof before the next system finds the weak spot the last one created.

Wind rarely announces itself with a missing roof. More often it does quiet, compounding damage.

Lifted shingles where the wind broke the adhesive seal, leaving the slope vulnerable
Creased shingles that have been folded back and will crack along the crease
Missing shingles, usually starting at the edges and the windward slope
Displaced or bent flashing around roof penetrations and edges

Once wind breaks the seal on a shingle, that shingle is loose for every storm that follows. The damage spreads from there, slope by slope, until water finds the opening. A single documented inspection after a wind event catches the broken seals before they become a leak, which is far cheaper than the interior repair that follows one.

Newer subdivisions in East Wake towns like Knightdale and in Johnston County around Clayton sit more open, with wide roof planes and little mature canopy to slow the wind. Those exposed slopes take the brunt of straight-line wind directly, which is why wind-lift is the first thing we look for on a storm inspection out there.

Lifted and creased shingles, missing shingles along the edges and windward slope, and displaced flashing. Much of it is hard to see from the ground, which is why we document each slope with close-up photos.

It varies with the roof's age and condition, but straight-line gusts in a typical Triangle thunderstorm are enough to break shingle seals on an aging or exposed roof. Older and wind-exposed roofs are the most vulnerable.

If the damage is significant, documenting it for a claim is worth doing, since wind damage is commonly covered by North Carolina policies. We inspect, photograph the damage, and give you the written report to file with confidence. Your deductible is your responsibility.
